Softball team sets out to defend 2018 WIC Championship

Dust from the field floats in the air, as the team jumps and cheers, the 2018 Brown County Girls Softball team celebrated their win against Northview and gained the title of Western Indiana Conference Champions. Now the WIC champions prepare for another season, hopefully winning the WIC title again and possibly sectionals this season. Head Coach Kevin Greve said, “Our goal is to win WIC again as well as win sectionals, but honestly the sky is the limit.” Coach Greve said that the team wants to advance as far as they can, but they plan on taking it one game at a time.

Having the title of WIC Champions comes with the challenge  of a target on the team’s back this year, Coach Greve said. Last year’s key ingredient involved the experience the girls had, most girls playing varsity and even travel softball.  Two seniors from last year’s team graduated, the majority are returning for the season.

Another challenge involves girls on the team learning new positions due to injuries. Coach Greve said that the girls will be prepared, but also learn how to “rise to challenges and not back down from adversity that will inevitably come through this season.” Player Aubrey Hollander has a knee injury from the summer that has caused changes in positions but she believes it could benefit the team. “Now we have people in different positions, but I think it’s kind of a good thing because you don’t want to get too comfortable, so this could give us a new intensity and a time to prove ourselves,” Hollander said.

Some people might question the team’s chemistry, but according to Coach Greve, this team reinvents the idea of working together. “They are really understanding that the success of the program is going to come from everyone working together, past teams were always in the process of trying to welcome that facet, while this one is actually getting there,” Coach Greve said. Whitney Clark said, “We’ve just gotten older and realize that drama and other things outside of softball aren’t important when you’re on the field”. The teams next game is April 5 against Columbus East.
